Woods Canyon Lake, AZ - Fellowship Adventures Hike

Jul 14

9:00 am

Jul 14

1:00 pm

Event Description:

Event CANCELED due to weather!

If you paid for kayaking and/or camping, your refund has already been processed.

Join us at Woods Canyon Lake in the cool country north of Payson.  This lake is surrounded by a dense forest of pine, fir, oak, and aspen, and sits at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Hikers are afforded expansive views of the scenery below the Mogollon Rim. The Mogollon Rim, pronounced by locals as "muggy-own," is a 200-mile long cliff in northern Arizona that ranges between 5,000 and 7,000 feet in elevation and serves as the geographical dividing line between the cool, high country above and the hot, dry desert below.

Woods Canyon Lake Regional Area is about a 2.5-hour drive from Calvary church's central campus.  Official park site:  Woods Canyon Lake Regional Area

The Woods Canyon Group Campground will be open from 1:00 PM on Friday through noon on Sunday.  Join us Friday and/or Saturday nights for worship around the campfire.  For details on camping, see the Camping section of the "Things to Know" page.

Groups will start hiking/kayaking at 9:00 AM and everyone should be done by 1:00 PM.  Please plan on being at the registration tables at the Rocky Point Picnic Ground by 8:30 AM so you can be assigned to your group and we can start hiking on time.

Take I-17 north to the 101 loop east.  Take the Shea exit (exit 41) and turn left (east) to Fountain Hills.  Go north on highway 87 towards Payson.  Turn right on highway 260 in Payson and go east through Star Valley. (Traffic cameras enforce their strict 45 MPH speed limit.)  Once on the rim, turn left towards Woods Canyon Lake and follow the signs to the Rocky Point Picnic Ground.  Get directions from Calvary Community ChurchLook for Fellowship Adventures signs.

There is very limited parking in the immediate event staging area, so we encourage carpooling.  You can sign up for carpooling during the registration process.  For details on carpooling, see the Carpooling section of the "Things to Know" page.

Carpools will meet at Calvary central campus (west side by the mail boxes), with the last carpool leaving at 6:00 AM.

Park entrance fee:  None

Kayak fees:  $20 for adults and $10.00 for ages 8 to 16; both single and double kayaks will be used; life jackets will be included and required!  This fee will be paid during registration.

Note:  We rent kayaks for this event; therefore registration fees are refundable unless you cancel before noon on Monday, July 3rd. If the event is cancelled, your registration fee will be automatically refunded.

Camping fees:  $5 adults/night; children 12 and under are free. This fee will be paid during registration.

This event will include kayaking on Woods Canyon Lake.  There will be options to hike and/or kayak.  No prior kayaking experience is necessary and we will have safety boaters to give you instructions.  Sharing time in the kayaks will allow us to keep the fee down to just $20 per person.  So we all need to play nice and share.

If you would like to bring your own boat, please give Jeff Elliott a call at (602) 579-0668 and let him know.

Woods Canyon Group Campground is located a short walking distance from Woods Canyon Lake. There is lots of room for tents, campers, and trailers (no hook-ups). We hope you will join us for singing and s’mores around the campfire!

Campers will be responsible for their own camping gear and food.

This hike will include 4 levels of hiking.  You will sign up for a level when registering.  The levels are listed below, or see levels of difficulty for more details.  Remember to bring lots of water.  Although the weather is cooler and refreshing, your body still needs lots of water.

Roadrunners – For the serious, go-fast hiker who desires the challenge of speed and distance (7 to 10 miles) and prefers to race past the sagebrush rather than smell it!

Coyotes – For the recreational hiker who desires energetic physical activity (4 to 7 miles) and the opportunity to stop and smell the sagebrush.

Prairie Dogs – For the casual hiker and families who want to get some exercise (about 3 miles) but will stop to enjoy the view and rest as they hike.

Geckos – For the person or family new to hiking or just coming back from a long time away.  They do about 2 miles of relatively flat trail.

Children are more than welcome to join this event, but please read the Children section of the "Things to Know" page before you come.

Coyotes - minimum age of 10*, if experienced

Prairie Dogs & Geckos - minimum age of 6*, unless you are going to carry them if needed

* If you are bringing a child under the age of 18 for whom you are not the parent or legal guardian, a Medical Waiver/Consent Form must be completed, signed by a parent or legal guardian and presented at the check-in prior to the event.

Dogs are welcome on all except the Roadrunner hike.  Remember to consider the heat before bringing Fido and please read the Pets section of the "Things to Know" page.
