Willow Springs Lake Hike/Kayak at Mogollon Rim

Event Description:

Eventbrite - Willow Springs Lake - Fellowship Adventures Hike/Kayak Event                                Eventbrite - Cancel Button

Like its nearby sister-lake, Woods Canyon, Willow Springs Lake is one of the most accessible of the Rim lakes and is a very scenic setting in a heavily forested area on the edge of the Mogollon Rim. The landscape, which includes Ponderosa Pine, Oak and Douglas Fir trees is simply gorgeous and at an elevation of about 7,500 feet, hikers and kayakers can expect pleasantly cool temperatures in a colorful autumn setting.

Hiking and kayaking will start at 9:00 AM and everyone should be done by 1:00 PM.

There is camping available at Canyon Point just a short distance away.  While not an organized part of the event, why not collect some of your Fellowship Adventures friends and make a weekend out of it? For details on how camping works, see the Camping section of the "Things to Know" page.

Take I-17 north to the 101 loop east. Take the Shea exit and head east to Fountain Hills. Go north on highway 87 towards Payson, then turn right on highway 260.  Approximately one mile east of the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center, turn left onto Sardine Point Road.   Look for Fellowship Adventures signs.  Get directions from Calvary Community Church.

You can sign up for carpooling during the registration process.  For details on carpooling, see the Carpooling section of the "Things to Know" page.

Carpools will meet at Calvary central campus (west side by the mailboxes), with the last carpool leaving at 6:00 AM. Carpool riders should prepare to cover driver’s expenses (gas and any other expenses incurred in transporting passengers to the event).

This event will include kayaking on Willow Springs Lake.  There will be options to hike and/or kayak.  No prior kayaking experience is necessary and we will have safety boaters to give you instructions.  Sharing time in the kayaks will allow us to keep the fee down to just $20 per person.  So we all need to play nice and share.

If you would like to bring your own boat, please give Tom Vail a call at (602) 312-5798 and let him know.

Park entrance fee:  None

Kayak fees:  $20 for adults and $10.00 for ages 8 to 16; both single and double kayaks will be used; life jackets will be included and required!  This fee will be paid during registration.

Note:  We rent kayaks for this event; therefore registration fees are refundable unless you cancel before noon on Monday, September 4. If the event is cancelled, your registration fee will be automatically refunded.

This hike will include 3 levels of hiking. You will sign up for a level when registering.  The levels are listed below, or see levels of difficulty for more details.  Remember to bring lots of water.  Although the weather is cooler and more refreshing, you will still need to stay hydrated.

Roadrunners – There will be no roadrunner group at this event due to time constraints.

Coyotes – For the recreational hiker who desires energetic physical activity (4 to 7 miles) and the opportunity to stop and smell the sagebrush.

Prairie Dogs – For the casual hiker and families who want to get some exercise (about 3 miles) but stop to enjoy the view and rest as they hike.

Geckos – For the person or family new to hiking or just coming back from a long time away.  Hikes are approximately 2 miles in length of relatively flat terrain.

Children are more than welcome to join this event, but please read the Children section of the "Things to Know" page before you come.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian in the group in which they hike.

Kayaking - minimum age of 12* in a single kayak

Roadrunners - minimum age of 15*, if experienced

Coyotes - minimum age of 10*, if experienced
